Starting School, Starting Fresh
For families resettling with children, enrolling them in school is one of the most important milestones—and one of the most complex.
First, GGIC identifies each child’s zoned school according to Alachua County Public Schools zoning map. Then, families complete the lengthy online registration process, ensuring all required documents are uploaded: proof of address, immunization records, I-94 forms, birth certificates, previous school transcripts, and arrival documentation. Once registered, students take an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) assessment to determine the level of language support they need.
The enrollment process can feel overwhelming for parents who have never experienced the US school system. Live interpretation and school visits ensures that families understand key policies such as bus transportation, school meals, and academic expectations. For the children, it’s the beginning of something new. For their parents, it’s a sign of stability and hope.

Thanks to the support of GGIC, our daughter was able to enroll in the education system where she met other Latin students. She was able to take her classes in English, with her new friends helping to translate the lessons at school. She is still adapting.
